Director H Vinoth has addressed questions surrounding actor-politician Vijay's decision to remain silent after a high-definition version of Jana Nayagan surfaced online months before its theatrical release.
Speaking during the film's promotional events in Chennai ahead of its July 23 release, Vinoth said the issue was treated as a legal matter and that any public statement from Vijay could have led to unnecessary political controversy.
Responding to questions from reporters, Vinoth said Vijay deliberately avoided making a public appeal asking fans not to watch the leaked version of the film.
According to the director, such an appeal could have prompted criticism over why the actor chose to comment on a film-related issue while remaining silent on other public concerns.
Vinoth suggested that the conversation might have shifted away from the film leak and turned into a broader political debate, something the team wanted to avoid.
The filmmaker explained that once the producer filed a complaint, the matter came under the jurisdiction of law enforcement agencies.
He said the leak was being handled through the appropriate legal process and believed it was best for Vijay not to intervene publicly while the investigation was underway.
According to Vinoth, allowing the authorities to deal with the issue helped keep the focus on the legal proceedings rather than political interpretations.
During the interaction, Vinoth also dismissed allegations suggesting that the leak had been orchestrated to benefit Vijay politically ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Calling such claims unfounded, he said a film produced on a large budget could not be intentionally leaked without investigators quickly uncovering the truth.
He further noted that Vijay was not serving as Chief Minister when the leak occurred and therefore rejected suggestions linking the incident to political strategy.
Vinoth acknowledged that the film's prolonged delay had been challenging for the cast and crew.
Originally planned for a Pongal release, Jana Nayagan was postponed due to certification procedures and legal issues before finally securing a July release.
The director said the team now feels relieved that the film is reaching audiences and hopes viewers will support it in theatres.
Jana Nayagan is expected to be Vijay's final feature film before he devotes himself to active politics.
Directed by H Vinoth, the political drama features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Narain.
The film is scheduled to hit theatres on July 23.
