The IIM Lucknow MBA in Family Business is a new two-year programme designed to prepare business owners and next-generation successors to manage, professionalise and expand family-run enterprises. The programme is scheduled to begin in July 2027 and will focus on succession planning, corporate governance, leadership and long-term business growth.
According to the institute, participants will develop a Business Transformation and Growth Plan covering a five-to-10-year period. The initiative aims to help family enterprises adapt to changing markets while preserving their legacy and strengthening their management practices.
The application deadline for Phase 1 is December 31, 2026, while Phase 2 applications will close on April 2, 2027.
₹20 Crore Business Threshold and Eligibility
A key eligibility condition is that applicants must be owners or successors of a family business or enterprise with an annual business investment or turnover of at least ₹20 crore.
Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent professional qualification, such as CA, CS or ICWA. They must also have secured at least 50% aggregate marks or an equivalent CGPA in Classes 10 and 12 and their undergraduate qualification.
Applicants must additionally possess a valid GMAT or GRE score, or a score from the IIM Lucknow Entrance Exam. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a personal interview to assess their involvement in the family enterprise, leadership ambitions and ability to apply the programme’s learning.
Curriculum Focuses on Succession and Growth
The curriculum will combine core management subjects—including strategy, finance, governance and digital transformation—with specialised topics such as succession planning, generational transitions, family business growth strategies, regulatory frameworks and strategic venture investing.
The programme will include six Family Business Labs across six trimesters. These will cover enterprise assessment, business vision, succession, leadership transitions, innovation and venture investing.
Participants will also have opportunities for global immersion, international family-business visits, simulations and case-based learning. Selected workshops will involve parents, siblings and senior family members in discussions on governance and succession.
Programme Structure and Campus Details
The MBA will follow an on-campus modular format at IIM Lucknow’s Noida campus, with participants attending classes for approximately seven days each month.
The programme will span six trimesters over approximately 20 months and include 33.5 academic credits, including five audit credits.
The institute also plans to draw on its Enterprise Incubation Centre ecosystem to expose participants to start-ups, entrepreneurship, innovation and industry practitioners.
With its emphasis on professional management and generational transition, the programme seeks to equip family-business leaders with the skills needed to sustain growth and navigate changing business environments.
