India’s rapidly evolving digital ecosystem is increasingly being shaped by artificial intelligence, with business leaders placing strong emphasis on building an AI-ready workforce as a key driver of future growth. As organisations across sectors accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies, upskilling employees and embedding ethical AI practices have emerged as central priorities for long-term competitiveness.
India’s business environment, supported by a young talent pool, expanding digital infrastructure, and a vibrant startup ecosystem, has steadily adapted to global technological shifts over the past decade. Today, this transformation is most visible in sectors such as manufacturing, automotive, e-commerce, and information technology, where AI is being deployed to improve financial forecasting, risk management, customer support, and data-driven decision-making. Enterprises are increasingly moving beyond pilot projects and adopting AI at scale to unlock operational efficiency and strategic value.
Insights from the KPMG 2025 India CEO Outlook Report underline the growing importance of workforce readiness in this transition. According to the findings, nearly three-quarters of Indian CEOs believe that AI preparedness among employees will have a significant impact on their organisation’s growth prospects over the next three years. This reflects a broader shift in how AI is perceived—from a disruptive technology to a core strategic enabler of business value.
The report also highlights that a majority of Indian CEOs rank AI among their top investment priorities, even amid global economic uncertainty. This confidence suggests that leadership teams are increasingly focused on enterprise-wide AI integration rather than isolated experimentation. From enhanced decision-making and automation to improved fraud detection and customer engagement, AI is becoming integral to business operations. However, executives acknowledge that technology alone is not enough. The effectiveness of AI initiatives ultimately depends on how well employees are equipped to use these tools.
As a result, organisations across industries are ramping up efforts to reskill and upskill their workforce. Companies in logistics, banking, education technology, advertising, and other sectors are offering foundational and advanced generative AI training programmes to bridge skill gaps. Many firms are re-evaluating how they train employees and redefining the skills required for entry-level roles, signalling a structural shift in talent strategies. Partnerships with technology providers and digital learning platforms are being leveraged to deliver personalised learning paths aligned with individual career goals.
Beyond technical skills, Indian CEOs are also paying close attention to responsible AI adoption. Ethical considerations, data governance, explainability of AI models, and cybersecurity preparedness are now viewed as essential elements of AI readiness. Business leaders recognise the need to balance innovation with accountability, particularly as regulatory frameworks around AI continue to evolve. A significant proportion of CEOs have flagged ethical risks and regulatory uncertainty as key challenges, reinforcing the importance of governance alongside growth.
While competition for AI talent remains a concern, executives increasingly agree that AI is transforming jobs rather than replacing human roles outright. India’s abundant talent base provides an advantage, but companies must innovate in how they attract, develop, and retain skilled professionals. Challenges related to data readiness, technical implementation, and the availability of multidisciplinary skills are now being addressed at the strategic and leadership level, rather than being confined to human resources alone.
Looking ahead, AI is expected to form the foundation of business growth over the next decade. Indian organisations that have proactively invested in workforce readiness, ethical frameworks, and continuous learning are likely to build greater resilience and sustain competitive advantage. With higher confidence than many global peers, Indian CEOs are betting on talent-driven AI adoption as a catalyst for future success, reinforcing the view that while AI represents the technology of tomorrow, AI readiness is a leadership imperative today.
