IIT Delhi Class of 2000 Pledges Rs 70 Crore in Record Alumni Contribution

In a landmark show of alumni commitment, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has received a record pledge of over Rs 70 crore from its Class of 2000, marking the largest-ever contribution made by a single graduating batch in the institute’s history. The announcement was made during the batch’s Silver Jubilee Reunion celebrations held on the IIT Delhi campus, commemorating 25 years since graduation.

The reunion brought together alumni from across India and abroad, many of whom returned to their alma mater to reconnect with classmates, interact with faculty members, and engage with current students. The event included campus walkthroughs, academic discussions, and exchanges on how the institute has evolved over the past two and a half decades, reinforcing the strong bond between IIT Delhi and its alumni community.

According to the institute, a significant portion of the Rs 70 crore pledge will be channelled into IIT Delhi’s General Endowment. This fund is designed to provide long-term financial flexibility, enabling the institute to support a wide spectrum of priorities without being constrained by short-term funding cycles. Areas expected to benefit include strengthening academic programmes, expanding cutting-edge research, supporting innovation and entrepreneurship, enhancing student scholarships, and fostering faculty excellence.

IIT Delhi officials described the contribution as a milestone in the institute’s alumni engagement journey. Alumni funding has increasingly become a key pillar in supporting higher education globally, and the Class of 2000’s collective pledge highlights the growing culture of structured and sustained giving among Indian institute graduates.

Speaking on behalf of the batch, Rohit Dube, an IIT Delhi alumnus and the batch’s fundraising lead, said the initiative was driven by a shared desire to give back in a meaningful and lasting way. He noted that the emphasis was not merely on the headline figure, but on broad participation and shared responsibility among batchmates. The objective, he said, was to create an endowment that would continue to support future generations of students, researchers, and innovators over decades.

The institute formally welcomed the announcement, with senior leadership acknowledging the role alumni play in shaping IIT Delhi’s future. Professor Nilanjan Senroy, Dean of Alumni Relations, said the pledge reflected a deep sense of belonging and responsibility that graduates feel toward the institution. He added that the contribution would significantly strengthen IIT Delhi’s efforts across education, research, and infrastructure development, creating a multiplier effect for years to come.

The pledged funds will be managed through the IIT Delhi Endowment Management Foundation, an independent entity set up in 2019 to build and steward long-term endowments. The foundation works with alumni, corporations, and philanthropists worldwide to mobilise resources in support of IIT Delhi’s strategic priorities.

Institute officials said the Class of 2000’s pledge stands as a powerful example of collective alumni action and underscores how sustained engagement can translate into tangible institutional impact. As IIT Delhi continues to expand its global footprint in research and education, such long-term endowments are expected to play an increasingly critical role in maintaining academic excellence and societal relevance.
