Jana Nayagan makers eye Republic Day box office window if court case clears: Report

The makers of Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay, are reportedly eyeing the lucrative Republic Day box office window, provided the ongoing legal battle surrounding the film’s censor certificate is resolved in their favour.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court declined to grant immediate relief to the producers and directed them to pursue their appeal before the Madras High Court. The matter is now expected to be heard around January 20. Trade sources suggest that if the verdict goes in favour of the makers and no further appeals delay the process, KVN Productions could move swiftly to lock a Republic Day release.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the production house is keen to capitalise on the national holiday period, which traditionally delivers one of the strongest theatrical openings of the year. A Republic Day release would give Jana Nayagan the advantage of an extended holiday run, with the makers weighing options between a Monday release on January 26 or a Friday launch ahead of the long weekend.

The timing is particularly crucial, as Jana Nayagan is widely expected to be Vijay’s final full-fledged film before he transitions completely into active politics. Given the actor’s unmatched fan following and the political undertones of the film, a national holiday release could significantly amplify both footfalls and public attention.

Trade data from before the postponement highlights the massive scale of anticipation surrounding the film. Reports indicate that Jana Nayagan had already secured close to Rs 40 crore in overseas advance bookings for its opening day, with nearly Rs 60 crore clocked for the opening weekend. The cumulative global pre-sales of around Rs 100 crore were reportedly wiped out overnight after the release was deferred due to the censor issue, causing major disruptions for overseas distributors across nearly 25 countries.

The impact was equally visible in domestic markets. In Karnataka alone, exhibitors were forced to refund tickets worth nearly Rs 6 crore, according to regional trade estimates. While the setback is considered temporary, the figures underline the extraordinary pre-release demand for the film — a level of anticipation rarely witnessed in recent Indian cinema.

Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is a high-voltage political thriller that blends mass appeal with contemporary political themes. The film is produced by KVN Productions and is titled Jan Neta in Hindi.

The ensemble cast includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Prakash Raj. Music for the film is composed by Anirudh Ravichander.

With legal clarity expected in the coming days, all eyes are now on January 20. If the case clears without further hurdles, Jana Nayagan could still reclaim a prime spot on the Republic Day box office calendar and deliver one of the biggest openings of the year.
