Kamal Haasan Flags Free Speech Concerns Amid Jana Nayagan Censorship Row

Actor and parliamentarian Kamal Haasan has spoken out strongly on issues of censorship and freedom of expression following the controversy surrounding Jana Nayagan, which saw its planned Pongal release blocked after the Central Board of Film Certification withheld certification.

The issue escalated after the Madras High Court passed an interim order directing the CBFC to grant the required certificate, prompting wider debate within the Tamil film industry. In response, Kamal Haasan issued a formal statement on his official Rajya Sabha letterhead, sharing it on X with the caption, “For Art, For Artists, For the Constitution.”

In his statement, Kamal Haasan emphasised that the Constitution of India guarantees freedom of expression and warned that this right should never be compromised due to procedural opacity. He stressed that the controversy goes far beyond a single film and reflects how the nation treats art and artists within a constitutional democracy.

Highlighting the broader impact of delayed or unclear certification, Kamal pointed out that cinema functions as an entire economic ecosystem. From writers and technicians to exhibitors, daily-wage workers, and small businesses, thousands depend on timely film releases for their livelihoods. According to him, lack of transparency in the certification process constrains creativity, disrupts economic activity, and weakens public trust.

He further noted that audiences in Tamil Nadu and across India are discerning and mature enough to engage with cinema responsibly, and therefore deserve openness and respect from regulatory institutions.

Calling for systemic reform, Kamal Haasan demanded a “principled relook” at the film certification framework. His suggestions included clearly defined timelines for certification, transparent evaluation criteria, and written, reasoned explanations for any cuts or modifications demanded by the censor board.

The veteran actor also urged members of the film industry to come together and initiate meaningful, constructive dialogue with the government. He argued that such reforms are essential not only to protect creative freedom but also to uphold constitutional values and strengthen democratic institutions by reinforcing trust in artists and audiences alike.
