Russian President Vladimir Putin struck a defiant and familiar wartime tone as Russia entered 2026, using his annual New Year address to project confidence in Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine. Speaking as the clock turned to the new year in Russia’s far east, Putin praised Russian troops fighting on the front lines and insisted that the country remained committed to what he described as eventual victory, even as the conflict approaches its fourth year.
The brief televised address was first broadcast in the Kamchatka Peninsula, the earliest Russian region to welcome the new year. Addressing soldiers and commanders, Putin referred to them as “heroes” and told them that the nation believed in their mission and in ultimate success. The speech, while short, was heavily focused on the war effort and offered no indication of any shift in Moscow’s stance as fighting continues into 2026.
Russia marked the New Year under the weight of a prolonged and costly conflict that has reshaped the country’s political and social landscape. The war has resulted in massive casualties on both sides, with estimates running into the tens or even hundreds of thousands. Millions of Ukrainians have been forced from their homes, and widespread destruction has left entire regions struggling to cope with the humanitarian fallout.
Notably, Putin avoided addressing recent claims by Russian authorities that Ukraine attempted a drone attack on one of his residences in northwestern Russia. Kyiv has denied the allegation, calling it false. December 31 also marked 26 years since Putin first came to power, a milestone that coincided with Russia entering yet another year of war.
Russia currently occupies roughly one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory and has continued near-daily missile and drone strikes across the country. These attacks have targeted cities, energy facilities, and other critical infrastructure, leading to prolonged power outages during winter conditions. Thousands of civilians have been killed since the start of the conflict, further deepening international concern over the humanitarian situation.
Despite the ongoing military campaign, diplomatic activity has intensified in recent weeks. US-led efforts to revive negotiations have gained momentum, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expected to attend a January 6 summit in France alongside Western allies. These discussions follow recent contacts between Zelenskyy and Donald Trump, aimed at exploring pathways toward a possible settlement. Moscow, however, has shown no public sign of softening its demands or adjusting its objectives.
The European Union has accused Russia of attempting to disrupt diplomatic efforts by raising fresh allegations against Ukraine. EU officials dismissed Moscow’s claim that Ukrainian drones targeted Putin’s residence as a deliberate distraction. The accusations were echoed by Russia’s defence ministry, which released video footage purporting to show debris from a downed drone allegedly involved in the incident. Ukraine has rejected the claims outright.
Further footage released by Russian authorities showed what they described as a drone carrying an explosive payload. However, no independent verification of the videos has been provided, and Russian officials have not disclosed details about Putin’s whereabouts at the time of the alleged incident. Apart from a brief reference by the Kremlin to a phone conversation with Trump, Putin himself has not publicly commented on the matter.
As Russia moves into 2026, Putin’s New Year address made clear that the Kremlin remains focused on projecting resolve and continuity. With military operations ongoing and diplomatic efforts fragile, the gap between Moscow’s confidence and the growing international pressure for an end to the war remains stark.
