Massive Blizzard Hits US East Coast: New York Shut Down, Flights Cancelled

A powerful winter storm has slammed the US East coast, paralysing transportation, shutting airports and prompting emergency declarations across multiple states. Authorities issued severe weather warnings as heavy snowfall, strong winds and near-whiteout conditions disrupted daily life.

States including New York and New Jersey declared emergencies while officials urged residents to stay indoors.

Thousands of Flights Cancelled and Delayed

Air travel across the region has been severely affected. Airlines cancelled more than 3,300 flights on Sunday and pre-emptively scrapped over 4,800 flights for Monday. Flight delays exceeded 5,000 as major airports suspended operations.

Airports serving the New York metropolitan area — including John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport — advised travellers to check flight status before heading to terminals.

Travel Bans and Emergency Measures Imposed

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani imposed a ban on non-emergency travel from Sunday night through Monday afternoon, warning of dangerous blizzard conditions.

City schools were closed, marking the first traditional snow day in years. Officials across neighbouring states issued similar restrictions and activated emergency response systems.

Authorities mobilised snowplough fleets, opened warming centres and initiated shelter outreach for vulnerable populations.

Blizzard Conditions and Snowfall Forecast

Forecasters warned that the storm could bring 1 to 2 feet of snow in parts of the region. Blizzard warnings extended from the Mid-Atlantic to New England, including Long Island and Boston.

Meteorologists said the storm may qualify as a “bomb cyclone,” rapidly intensifying along the coast. Wind gusts could reach hurricane-force levels, with visibility dropping to a quarter mile and snowfall rates reaching up to 2 inches per hour.

Major Disruptions Across the Northeast

The storm has already disrupted daily life across the Northeast corridor:

  • Broadway performances cancelled

  • Deliveries suspended

  • Government facilities closed

  • Public transport severely affected

Officials warned that heavy, wet snow combined with strong winds could topple trees, damage power lines and cause prolonged outages.

Residents Urged to Stay Indoors

Authorities advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors as emergency crews work to clear roads and restore services. Dangerous road conditions and blowing snow are expected to persist.

With the storm continuing to intensify, officials warned that recovery efforts may take several days once snowfall subsides.

The powerful nor’easter is expected to be among the most disruptive winter storms to hit the region in recent years.
