Trump’s Cryptic Post After El Mencho Killing Sparks US Role Speculation

US President Donald Trump sparked speculation about Washington’s role in the killing of Mexican drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, after posting a cryptic message on social media.

“We’re winning too much, it’s just not fair!” Trump wrote, prompting debate about possible US involvement in the operation.

El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), died in custody after being wounded during a Mexican special forces raid in Jalisco state.

Mexico Clarifies Operation Was Locally Executed

Mexico’s embassy in Washington rejected claims of direct US involvement, stating that the operation was planned and executed by Mexican forces. Officials clarified that US agencies provided only complementary intelligence support under existing bilateral cooperation frameworks.

The clarification followed public statements acknowledging intelligence sharing between the two countries.

US Acknowledges Intelligence Support

US officials confirmed intelligence assistance to Mexican authorities during the operation. The White House said the support was aimed at helping dismantle narcotics networks responsible for trafficking drugs into North America.

Officials praised Mexican forces for executing the operation and described the killing as a major blow to organised crime networks.

Pressure to Crack Down on Cartels

The operation comes amid growing pressure from Washington on Mexico to intensify action against drug cartels blamed for producing and trafficking fentanyl into the United States.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum faces the challenge of balancing security crackdowns with domestic stability as cartel retaliation risks escalate.

Violence Follows High-Profile Operation

Following El Mencho’s death, cartel operatives launched retaliatory violence in multiple states, including road blockades, vehicle burnings, and business arson.

Transport corridors were disrupted and flights were suspended in affected regions amid security concerns.

In Puerto Vallarta, travellers described scenes of panic as smoke plumes rose over the resort city.

One of the Biggest Blows to Drug Networks

El Mencho’s killing is considered one of Mexico’s most consequential strikes against transnational drug trafficking groups. CJNG has been a major player in the fentanyl trade, which has contributed to a growing opioid crisis in North America.

Recent years have also seen the capture of leaders from rival cartels, reflecting intensified efforts to dismantle organised narcotics networks.

Situation Remains Sensitive

While authorities say daily life continues normally in much of the country, precautionary measures including school closures and security deployments remain in place in affected regions.

The incident highlights the complex cooperation between Mexico and the United States in combating organised crime, while also underscoring the risks of retaliatory violence following high-profile operations.
