Speculation surrounding a possible Indian Premier League return for Mustafizur Rahman has been firmly dismissed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, with its president categorically rejecting reports of any outreach from the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Rumours circulating in sections of Bangladeshi media had claimed that the BCCI had approached the BCB to facilitate Mustafizur’s return to the Indian Premier League in 2026, allegedly as a goodwill gesture amid strained relations between the two cricket boards. These reports suggested that the move was intended to ease diplomatic and sporting tensions following the fast bowler’s release from his franchise squad earlier this year.
Addressing the speculation, BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul made it clear that no such communication had taken place. He stated that there had been neither written nor verbal discussions with Indian cricket officials regarding Mustafizur’s participation in the IPL. He further added that no internal discussions had been held within the BCB on the matter, dismissing the reports as entirely baseless.
The rumours emerged after Mustafizur was released from his IPL franchise following a directive from the BCCI. The move came in the backdrop of heightened tensions between India and Bangladesh, triggered by protests in India over the targeted killings of Hindus in Bangladesh. The decision reportedly caused dissatisfaction within the BCB and added to the already strained bilateral cricketing relationship.
In the aftermath of Mustafizur’s release, the Bangladesh board took the issue beyond bilateral channels. The BCB formally approached the International Cricket Council, expressing concerns over player safety and requesting that Bangladesh’s matches in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 be shifted out of India.
The tournament is scheduled to begin on February 7, with Bangladesh originally slated to play four matches on Indian soil, including three in Kolkata and one in Mumbai. The BCB has requested that these fixtures be relocated to Sri Lanka, which is a co-host for the tournament, citing security concerns for players and support staff.
While the ICC has not yet announced any changes to the venue allocation, the BCB has stated that the global body has shown openness to reviewing the concerns raised. A second detailed communication was sent to the ICC on January 8, outlining specific security-related apprehensions associated with travel and match arrangements in India.
As of now, there has been no indication that Bangladesh’s fixtures will be moved away from Kolkata and Mumbai. The situation remains under review, with the ICC expected to take a final call after consulting all stakeholders.
For Mustafizur Rahman, the controversy means that his immediate IPL future remains uncertain. Despite being one of Bangladesh’s most experienced and sought-after fast bowlers in T20 cricket, any potential return to the league will now depend on formal decisions by the BCCI, franchise interest, and broader diplomatic developments between the two boards.
