New Zealand’s Indian-origin leg-spinner Adithya Ashok is all set to face India in the upcoming three-match ODI series, carrying with him not just cricketing preparation but a deeply personal connection to the country of his birth. The 23-year-old spinner, who moved from Vellore in Tamil Nadu to New Zealand at the age of four, will be under the spotlight as the Black Caps begin their series in Baroda on January 11.
Ashok’s journey back to India is layered with emotion, learning and symbolism. A visible reminder of his roots is the Tamil tattoo on his bowling arm that reads “En vazhi thani vazhi” — a famous punchline associated with Rajinikanth. The line, translating to “my way is a unique way”, holds special meaning for Ashok, as it was inked in memory of his late grandfather, with whom he shared a close bond and many movie-watching moments.
Beyond sentiment, Ashok believes he is better prepared for Indian conditions than most first-time visitors. In 2025, he spent two weeks training at the academy of Chennai Super Kings, an experience he credits for sharpening his understanding of subcontinental pitches. Used to bowling on pace-friendly surfaces in New Zealand, Ashok was exposed to the nuances of red soil and black soil wickets in Chennai, learning how spin behaves differently across conditions.
The stint, he says, was less about guarantees and more about building a mental library. Understanding how surfaces react, how batters set themselves, and how bowlers must adapt their lengths and variations has given him a foundational edge. That knowledge could prove crucial against a formidable Indian batting lineup featuring experienced players and aggressive middle-order hitters.
Ashok’s confidence is also bolstered by strong mentorship within New Zealand cricket. While he idolises the late Shane Warne, he has leaned heavily on senior spinners within the system. He has described fellow leg-spinner Ish Sodhi as a guiding figure, someone he watched growing up and now looks to for advice and reassurance. Another major influence has been Tarun Nethula, who continues to mentor him through the ups and downs of professional cricket.
The young spinner’s path has not been without setbacks. A serious back injury earlier in his career required surgery — a rare occurrence for a spinner — but Ashok credits the support of coaches and former players for helping him return stronger. Now fully fit, he sees the India series as an opportunity to test himself in challenging conditions and grow as a complete cricketer.
For Ashok, this tour is about more than wickets. Playing international cricket in the country of his birth, armed with lessons from Chennai and inspired by his heritage, marks a defining chapter in his career. Whether or not immediate success follows, the series promises to add invaluable experience to a spinner who is steadily carving his own path — very much in line with the words etched on his arm.
