Abhinav Kashyap Calls Aamir Khan “Slyest Fox,” Questions Dangal Hypocrisy

Director Abhinav Kashyap, known for his outspoken views on Bollywood, recently launched a critique of Aamir Khan, calling him “the slyest fox” and questioning the actor’s influence in the film industry. In a candid interview with Bollywood Thikana, Kashyap reflected on his experiences working with Khan on advertising projects and highlighted concerns about the superstar’s control over creative processes.

Recalling his time on ad shoots, Kashyap described Aamir as a highly controlling figure. “I made two to three ads with Aamir. He is very particular, and working with him is exhausting; he drains you out. He interferes in everything—editing, direction, everything. It’s an entire ecosystem maintained for strict control,” Kashyap said. The director claimed Aamir dominates every aspect of production, leaving limited space for others to contribute.

Kashyap also challenged the actor’s well-known reputation for perfectionism. He suggested that the repeated takes and meticulous attention, often praised in the industry, sometimes contribute little to the final outcome. “If Aamir gives 25 takes, his first and last are often the same. He watches each take and says, ‘One more, a little more,’ but ultimately there’s nothing new,” he explained. According to Kashyap, this approach can create the illusion of depth while stifling creative input from collaborators.

Further, Kashyap questioned why top filmmakers such as Rajkumar Hirani and Rakesh Omprakash Mehra continue to work with Khan despite these challenges. “I respect them—they are very successful—but why do people keep meeting at Aamir Khan’s house? What is it in him that others don’t have?” he asked.

The director also addressed concerns about Khan’s social contributions. Highlighting the massive success of Dangal, particularly its earnings in China, Kashyap asked what the actor has done in terms of social impact during crises such as floods. He specifically referenced Mahavir Phogat, whose story inspired Dangal, and alleged that Khan declined Phogat’s request to open an Akhada in Haryana for training children.

Kashyap concluded by asserting that while Aamir Khan is undeniably talented, he often oversteps his role as an actor, taking over creative decisions and controlling multiple facets of production. These remarks add to ongoing discussions about the balance between star influence and collaborative filmmaking in Bollywood.
