At 80 years old, Usha Ray has etched her name in India’s education history by earning an MBA in Hospital and Healthcare Management. As a two-time cancer survivor who embraced online learning late in life, her story redefines determination and challenges perceptions about age, ambition, and the pursuit of knowledge.
Usha enrolled in the MBA programme offered by Dr DY Patil Vidyapeeth Centre for Online Learning, Pune, at the age of 77. Her decision was not motivated by competition but by the desire to continue growing intellectually. According to her, the thought of letting her mind remain idle did not sit well. Evenings after work felt like wasted time, and she wanted to use them productively.
Her timeline is a testament to lifelong learning. She completed her Master’s in Zoology in 1966, followed by a degree in Education in 1978. She spent decades as an educator in India and abroad, shaping students while nurturing an unending thirst for learning. But after retiring from the classroom, she did not want to retire from knowledge.
Her academic journey took on deeper meaning after two battles with cancer. She overcame stage-four cancer in 2003, only to face the disease again in 2020. Both times, she recovered with renewed resolve and faith. These experiences motivated her to keep moving forward and never view challenges as barriers.
When she enrolled for her MBA in 2023, digital learning tools were unfamiliar. She had never used a laptop before, but she purchased one and taught herself how to operate it. The online programme structure, featuring recorded sessions and flexible access, enabled her to balance studies with her role at Lovee Shubh Hospital in Lucknow.
Her efforts were closely observed by faculty and students. She became a symbol of strength and commitment, influencing many to rethink what is possible at any stage of life. Her educators describe her as a powerful example of persistence who proves that age does not limit capability.
For Usha, graduating at 80 is not the end of her academic goals. She now aspires to pursue a PhD and contribute further to the field of healthcare. She believes that education is not bound by age or circumstance; it is an ongoing process that enriches life.
Her message to others is both simple and transformative: do not allow difficulties to halt progress. Keep learning, stay curious, and move ahead. With her achievement, Usha Ray has not only completed a degree but also broken stereotypes, showing that determination can rewrite expectations at any age.
