Centre Considers Extending Parliamentary Committee Tenures by Two Years for Enhanced Bill Scrutiny

The Centre is reportedly examining the possibility of extending the tenure of parliamentary committees by up to two years, following the expiry of most panel terms on September 20. Government sources indicate that the reconstitution of these committees is under consideration, with a focus on enhancing the efficiency and depth of legislative scrutiny.

Several chairpersons of Parliamentary Standing Committees have expressed concerns that the current one-year term is insufficient to thoroughly examine bills, policy matters, and other parliamentary subjects. One official remarked, “The time limit of one year is very less to conduct detailed and meaningful analysis of important legislations.”

In addition to extending the tenure, the government is reviewing requests from multiple Members of Parliament seeking transfers between committees, aiming to align expertise and committee assignments more effectively. The move is seen as a step toward strengthening parliamentary oversight and ensuring that bills and policy measures receive comprehensive evaluation before adoption.

Officials stress that a longer tenure would allow committees to function more effectively, facilitating deeper research, stakeholder consultations, and informed recommendations to the Parliament. The final decision on tenure extensions and committee reconstitution is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

This development underscores the government’s focus on legislative efficiency and the importance of empowering parliamentary committees to fulfill their mandate of detailed scrutiny and policy review.
