Eklavya Schools in Tripura Educating 5,000 Tribal Students, Says CM Manik Saha

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that 12 of the 21 sanctioned Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) are currently operational, offering free education to nearly 5,000 tribal students across the state.

Funded by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs, these schools are designed to provide holistic education to students from tribal communities while preserving their rich cultural and linguistic heritage.

Speaking at the inauguration of a new EMRS at Jampuijala in Sepahijala district, Saha highlighted the initiative’s role in empowering tribal youth through quality education and cultural awareness.

“The EMRS model, introduced in 1997–98, has expanded significantly under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. These institutions aim to bring equality and holistic education to vulnerable tribal students,” Saha said.

Advancing Tribal Education in Tripura

The newly opened EMRS at Jampuijala began its academic journey with 60 students, though it can accommodate up to 480. The Chief Minister said the government is committed to improving both academic and living standards for tribal children.

“Out of 21 sanctioned schools, 12 are already functional. Once all are operational, over 10,000 tribal students from classes 6 to 12 will receive free education, marking a transformative step for tribal regions,” he added.

Strengthening Student Welfare and Infrastructure

Highlighting the state’s broader education initiatives, Saha noted that 29 new hostels have been built in rural areas for tribal students. Currently, 34,000 students reside in 407 government-run hostels across Tripura, ensuring access to education in remote areas.

“The appointment of hostel wardens and improved infrastructure reflect the government’s commitment to last-mile welfare,” Saha said. He also revealed that Rs 29 crore was spent on constructing the new EMRS at Jampuijala.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the state’s dedication to expanding educational opportunities for tribal communities while safeguarding their traditions and values.
