Ladakh Activist Sonam Wangchuk Arrested Under NSA, Shifted to Jodhpur

Sep 27, 2025: Ladakh statehood activist Sonam Wangchuk has been arrested under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) following allegations that he incited a mob through provocative statements. He was shifted to Jodhpur, Rajasthan, as authorities also suspended internet services in Leh to prevent the spread of misinformation.

The arrest comes a day after the Ministry of Home Affairs cancelled the FCRA registration of Wangchuk’s non-profit Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), which prevents it from receiving foreign funds. Wangchuk has denied wrongdoing, stating that SECMOL did not take foreign contributions but conducted lawful business transactions with international organizations, paying all taxes.

Violence erupted in Leh two days ago, resulting in four deaths and over 50 injuries, including security personnel. The Centre noted that Wangchuk did not call off his fast despite ongoing dialogue with the Apex Body Leh (ABL) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). Authorities said the mob was incited by his statements and criticized him for leaving in an ambulance without attempting to control the situation.

Apart from advocating for Ladakh’s statehood, Wangchuk seeks to place the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which allows autonomous governance for tribal areas. In response to his arrest, Wangchuk stated he was prepared for detention and suggested it could galvanize public awareness about governance issues.

Political leaders have reacted to the arrest. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called it unfortunate, stating the central government should address why the situation escalated. Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir described the arrest as unjust, asserting that Wangchuk did not encourage violence.
