Massive Chevron Refinery Fire in California Contained, No Injuries Reported

A massive fire erupted at the Chevron oil refinery in El Segundo, California, late Thursday, sending flames visible for miles. By early Friday, authorities confirmed that the blaze had been contained and posed no threat to public safety. Residents were advised to remain indoors, though no evacuations were required.

Officials reported that the fire was confined to one section of the refinery. All staff were safe, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Road closures remain in effect while monitoring continues.

California Governor Gavin Newsom stated that his office was closely coordinating with local authorities. LA Mayor Karen Bass reassured residents via X, saying the Los Angeles Fire Department is prepared to assist as needed.

The El Segundo refinery, operational since 1911, spans approximately 1.5 square miles and can process up to 290,000 barrels of crude oil daily. It produces petrol, jet fuel, and diesel and plays a vital role in meeting Southern California’s energy demands.

Chevron emphasized that the fire did not extend beyond the refinery fence line, and precautionary measures will remain in place until the cause is determined. The incident has raised renewed concerns over refinery safety protocols.
