Japan Set to Get First Female PM as Sanae Takaichi Wins LDP Leadership

Sanae Takaichi has won Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership race, positioning her to become the country’s first female Prime Minister. The 64-year-old defeated male rivals, including 44-year-old Shinjiro Koizumi, who aimed to become Japan’s youngest modern-era leader.

Takaichi, an admirer of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and a supporter of ex-premier Shinzo Abe’s conservative vision, has held key roles in government since her election to parliament from Nara in 1993. She has served as minister for economic security, internal affairs, and gender equality.

Japan’s Parliament is expected to vote on October 15 to formally elect the new Prime Minister, succeeding Shigeru Ishiba. Takaichi’s victory comes amid growing public concern over soaring prices and rising support for opposition parties advocating massive stimulus and tougher immigration controls.

As the sole female contender in the five-way LDP race, Takaichi’s win marks a historic milestone in Japan’s political history, inspiring potential for broader gender representation in Japanese politics.
