New GST Rates Effective September 22: Why Consumers Must Recheck MRPs

From September 22, revised GST rates will take effect across India, bringing potential savings for consumers but also creating room for confusion at local stores.

The Department of Consumer Affairs has issued an updated advisory to streamline implementation for manufacturers and retailers. However, packaged goods produced before September 22 may carry both the old and revised MRPs. Companies are permitted to affix new labels on existing stock, which means products could display two prices — the original and the updated GST-inclusive rate.

For instance, a biscuit pack earlier priced at ₹50 may now reflect a reduced MRP of ₹48 after the tax revision. Yet, unaware shopkeepers could still charge the higher price, leading to overpayment.

In earlier rules, firms were required to publish revised MRPs in newspapers. That requirement has been waived; companies must now circulate updated price lists to dealers and legal metrology authorities. Old packaging can be used until March 31, 2026, with MRPs corrected via stickers, stamps, or digital printing.

Experts note the move eases compliance burdens for businesses while ensuring consumer transparency. Manoj Mishra, Partner at Grant Thornton Bharat, remarked that the clarification is business-friendly but urged consumers to carefully verify MRPs and bills to benefit fully from tax cuts.

In short, the GST revision is consumer-positive, but vigilance is key. Checking product labels and receipts will ensure buyers receive the full benefit of reduced taxation.
