Raebareli Man Beaten to Death Over Theft Suspicion, 5 Arrested

A shocking incident in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, has left a young man dead after he was brutally beaten by a mob over suspected theft. The victim, Hariom, was on his way to his in-laws’ house on the night of October 2 when villagers stopped him on the Unchahar–Dalmau road and attacked him with sticks and rods, leading to his death on the spot.

The violent incident was captured on video, which went viral on social media, prompting public outrage and swift action by authorities. Following a complaint by Hariom’s father, Ganga Deen, the police registered an FIR and arrested five men in connection with the killing: Vaibhav Singh, Vipin Kumar, Vijay Maurya, Suresh Kumar, and Sahdev.

In a move signaling accountability, the Raebareli Superintendent of Police suspended the Unchahar SHO, local in-charge, and three other police personnel for negligence in handling the situation. Inspector Girija Shankar Tripathi confirmed that the five accused were sent to jail after their arrest on October 3.

Police recovered Hariom’s leather belt, white shirt, vest, and an eucalyptus stick used during the assault. Investigators are continuing efforts to identify and apprehend any other individuals involved in the mob attack.

The case has sparked renewed concerns about rising mob violence and vigilantism in rural Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the urgent need for stronger law enforcement and public awareness to prevent such tragedies.
