Smriti Mandhana’s Idea Becomes Reality: Mithali Raj and Ravi Kalpana Honoured at Vizag

In a historic tribute to Indian women’s cricket, the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam will name stands after Mithali Raj and Ravi Kalpana on October 12, ahead of India’s Women’s World Cup 2025 clash against Australia. This initiative recognizes the significant contributions of both cricketers and stems from a public suggestion by Smriti Mandhana during the “Breaking the Boundaries” fireside chat with Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh in August.

The move reflects a broader effort to honour female athletes who have shaped Indian cricket, inspiring future generations. The formal ceremony will take place prior to the India-Australia match, ensuring the occasion receives widespread attention.

Mithali Raj: A Legendary Career

Mithali Raj retired in 2022 with 7,805 runs from 232 ODIs at an average of 50.68, including seven centuries. She also scored 2,364 runs in 89 T20Is with 17 fifties and 699 runs in 12 Tests at an average of 43.68. Her longevity and consistency have made her an iconic figure and role model for aspiring cricketers across India.

Ravi Kalpana: Inspiring Regional Talent

Though her international career spanned just seven ODIs between 2015 and 2016, Ravi Kalpana has been instrumental in promoting cricket in Andhra Pradesh. Her journey inspired regional players such as Arundhati Reddy, S Meghana, and N Sri Charani, motivating young women in the region to pursue the sport seriously.

Smriti Mandhana’s Role

Mandhana’s suggestion at the “Breaking the Boundaries” event was pivotal in prompting the ACA and Minister Lokesh to take action.

“Smriti Mandhana’s thoughtful suggestion captured a wider public sentiment. Translating that idea into immediate action reflects our collective commitment to gender parity and to acknowledging the trailblazers of women’s cricket,” said Nara Lokesh.

Looking Ahead: Women’s World Cup 2025

Mithali Raj, currently part of the broadcast team for the tournament, will be present at the stadium on Sunday. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s side has won their opening two matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan and will next face an in-form South Africa in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.
