Stock Market Holiday: NSE & BSE Closed on Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra

India will observe Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra on Thursday, October 2, 2025, resulting in a stock market holiday. Investors will resume trading on Friday, October 3.

After ending an eight-day losing streak, Sensex and Nifty rose nearly 1% on Wednesday, driven by gains in banking and auto stocks, following the RBI’s decision to keep the repo rate at 5.5% while maintaining a neutral stance.


Market Closures on October 2

According to the NSE and BSE holiday calendar, the following segments will remain closed:

  • Equities and equity derivatives

  • Securities Lending & Borrowing (SLB) segment

  • Commodity marketsMCX and NCDEX

  • Currency derivatives

No morning or evening trading sessions will be conducted on these exchanges.


Upcoming October Market Holidays

Apart from October 2, exchanges will also remain closed on:

  • October 21, 2025 – Diwali Laxmi Pujan (Special Muhurat Trading: 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm)

  • October 22, 2025 – Balipratipada

Altogether, including weekends, there will be 11 market holidays in October.

Markets will also close later in 2025 on:

  • November 5 – Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev

  • December 25 – Christmas


Are Banks Open?

All banks across India will remain closed on Gandhi Jayanti, a gazetted national holiday. Net banking, mobile banking, and ATMs will continue to operate as usual.

Regular trading hours for domestic equity markets are 9:15 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday, with a pre-open session from 9:00 am to 9:15 am.
