Tamil Nadu Bans Coldrif Cough Syrup After Child Deaths in MP and Rajasthan

The Tamil Nadu government has banned the sale of the cough syrup Coldrif with effect from October 1, following suspicions linking it to the death of 11 children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department ordered the removal of the syrup from the market and froze existing stocks.

Inspections were conducted at the manufacturer’s facility in Sunguvarchathram, Kancheepuram district, and samples were collected for testing. The Union government will also conduct tests in government-run laboratories to check for the presence of Diethylene Glycol, a toxic chemical.

The company supplies medicines to Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Puducherry, and has been ordered to halt production until laboratory reports are available.

In response to the incident, the Union Health Ministry issued an advisory instructing that cough and cold medications should not be prescribed to children under 2 years.

Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath attributed the deaths to alleged contamination involving a brake oil solvent in cough syrups. The death toll has reached 9 in Madhya Pradesh and 2 in Rajasthan.

Authorities are awaiting lab results before taking further action, while the ban ensures immediate public safety.
