Trump Praises Modi, Gestures to Shehbaz Sharif at Gaza Peace Summit

At the Gaza Peace Summit held in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh, US President Donald Trump praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very good friend” while gesturing toward Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, stating that India and Pakistan would “live very nicely together.”

Co-hosting the summit alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Trump lauded both South Asian leaders for their roles in maintaining regional stability. “India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top,” Trump said with a smile. “He’s done a fantastic job. I think that Pakistan and India are going to live very nicely together.”

Gesturing toward Shehbaz Sharif, who stood behind him, Trump quipped, “He’s going to help make that happen, right?” The light-hearted moment drew laughter from the visiting Pakistani leader.

During his address, Trump also praised Pakistan’s military leadership and stressed that regional peace “depends on good friends doing good things.”

Shehbaz Sharif Credits Trump for India-Pakistan Truce

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, invited by Trump to speak at the summit, expressed gratitude for the US leader’s mediation efforts. “Had it not been for this gentleman, who knows—India and Pakistan are both nuclear powers—had he not intervened with his wonderful team during those four days, the war could’ve escalated to a level where no one would have lived to tell what happened,” Sharif said.

Trump had earlier reiterated his claim of preventing a potential conflict between India and Pakistan, describing it as one of several crises resolved under his leadership.

India’s Representation at the Gaza Peace Summit

India was represented at the summit by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, who attended as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special envoy. He became the first Indian minister to officially meet Trump since Operation Sindoor.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared on X that India “welcomes the signing of the landmark peace agreement and hopes this will lead to lasting peace in the region.”

Modi Praises Trump’s Peace Efforts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Trump’s peace diplomacy in achieving the Gaza ceasefire. In a post on X, Modi welcomed the release of the final group of 20 hostages held by Hamas for over two years, calling it a “significant humanitarian milestone.”

The Sharm el-Sheikh summit concluded with the signing of a landmark Gaza ceasefire agreement, attended by leaders from across the Arab and Muslim world. Trump hailed it as “a new and beautiful day for the Middle East” following two years of intense conflict between Israel and Hamas.
