UK Visa Rules 2026: Tougher English Tests, Higher Student Fund Proof, Shorter Graduate Route

UK Visa Rules 2026: Tougher English Tests, Higher Student Fund Proof, Shorter Graduate Route

The UK government has introduced stricter immigration and student visa rules, impacting skilled migrants and international students, particularly from India. The new measures, approved in Parliament on October 15, 2025, include tougher English language requirements, higher financial proof, and a reduction in post-study work duration.

Stricter English Tests for Skilled Migrants

Starting January 8, 2026, all skilled visa applicants must take the Secure English Language Test (SELT) administered by a Home Office-approved provider.

Applicants are required to demonstrate B2-level proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, equivalent to A-Level or Class 12 standard.

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized that migrants must learn English to integrate and contribute effectively to British society.

Graduate Visa Duration Reduced

From January 1, 2027, international students under the Graduate Route will have only 18 months (down from 2 years) to secure graduate-level employment post-study.

PhD graduates remain eligible for a 3-year post-study stay, while the revised Graduate Route aims to ensure students transition into meaningful jobs contributing to the UK economy.

Home Office Minister Mike Tapp stated that the changes address the gap where many graduates are not moving into appropriate employment.

Higher Financial Proof for Students

The financial requirements for student visas are increasing by nearly 3% for the 2025–26 academic year:

  • London: £1,529/month (up from £1,483)

  • Other regions: £1,171/month (up from £1,136)

These adjustments are part of the UK Immigration White Paper, aiming to balance net migration reduction with opportunities for highly skilled migrants and genuine students.

The new rules are expected to affect thousands of Indian students planning to study in the UK, prompting them to reassess financial planning, English preparation, and post-study work options.

For the latest updates, students should check the UK Home Office official website and stay informed on visa deadlines and requirements.
