US May Arm Ukraine With Tomahawks, Aid Long-Range Strikes

The Trump administration has reportedly approved providing Ukraine with intelligence to carry out long-range missile strikes deep inside Russian territory, signaling growing frustration with Moscow over the stalled peace process.

This would be the first time the US is offering such assistance, potentially enabling Ukraine to target Russian energy infrastructure, including refineries, pipelines, and power plants, Russia’s key source of revenue amid the ongoing conflict.

Background

According to The Wall Street Journal, President Trump authorized US intelligence agencies and the Pentagon to aid Ukraine with these operations. NATO allies have also been asked to provide support.

While Ukraine would require Tomahawk missiles, which have a range of 2,500 km, the US has yet to decide on supplying them. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requested the missiles during talks with Trump at the UN General Assembly in New York last week.

Strategic Implications

  • The strikes could allow Ukraine to hit Moscow and Western Russia, pressuring Putin.

  • Trump has already imposed a 50% tariff on India and urged European countries to stop buying Russian oil, aiming to pressure Moscow economically.

  • Despite these measures, the US continues to import chemicals, uranium, and fertilisers from Russia.

The move marks a major shift in US policy, showing growing impatience with Russia’s reluctance to negotiate. While Trump remains committed to seeking an end to the war, further sanctions on Russia have not yet been imposed.
