Bangladesh Awami League Suspended, Not Banned: Yunus

Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus clarified that the Awami League (AL) remains a valid political party, though its activities have been temporarily suspended. The statement comes amid growing speculation over the upcoming 2026 general elections.

Speaking with Zeteo at the UN General Assembly, Yunus said the suspension could potentially be lifted, though he expressed concerns over the party’s alleged involvement in past violence.

"The AL remains a valid party with activities put on hold. Lifting the suspension is a possibility," Yunus said.

Background

In May 2025, the Yunus-led caretaker government suspended all activities of the Awami League under the Anti-Terrorism Act, and the Election Commission later cancelled the party’s registration.

While Yunus struck a relatively softer tone, his Law Adviser Asif Nazrul dismissed any likelihood of the suspension being revoked soon. He added that government prosecutors at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) are preparing to try the AL as a party.

Political Context

  • BNP leads polls: Recent surveys show Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) as the frontrunner with over 39% public support, while Awami League garners 18%.

  • NCP lagging: The student-led National Citizen Party (NCP) has struggled to gain traction, failing to cross the 5% threshold in pre-poll surveys.

  • Sheikh Hasina cases: Former PM and AL leader Sheikh Hasina, along with senior colleagues, face multiple murder accusations following the collapse of the AL regime in August 2024.

Yunus’ remarks are seen as a strategic message to the BNP, hinting at the possibility of AL’s revival while maintaining a hard stance on past violence.
