Odisha SC, ST Students Get Admission Fee Waiver in Govt Medical, Engineering Colleges

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced an admission fee waiver for students belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities who secure seats in government medical and engineering colleges across the state.

The decision aims to reduce the financial burden on meritorious students who successfully clear competitive entrance examinations but may struggle to arrange the money required for admission.

According to the government announcement, eligible SC and ST students will not be required to deposit admission fees when they join government medical or engineering institutions. They will also receive relief from the payment of fees for six months after admission.

The decision was taken after the Chief Minister was informed about students who had qualified for professional courses but were facing financial difficulties during the admission process. Despite succeeding in highly competitive entrance examinations, some students were reportedly finding it difficult to arrange the initial amount needed to secure their seats.

For many students, qualifying for an entrance examination is only the beginning of the journey towards a professional degree. Admission charges and other expenses at the start of an academic programme can create an additional financial challenge, particularly for students from economically weaker backgrounds.

The fee waiver is intended to remove this immediate hurdle for SC and ST students entering government medical and engineering colleges in Odisha. By allowing students to complete admission without making an immediate fee payment, the measure is expected to provide additional financial relief to eligible candidates and their families.

The benefit will extend beyond the admission date, with eligible students receiving a six-month period without admission fee payments under the announced arrangement.

The government has not yet clarified the complete list of fees that will come under the waiver. More information is expected after detailed implementation guidelines are issued by the state government.

The scheme will cover government medical and engineering colleges in Odisha. Further instructions are expected to explain the eligibility criteria, fee components covered and the process institutions will follow to implement the decision.
