Vinod Kapri’s Pyre explores ageing, migration and companionship through the lives of an elderly couple in Uttarakhand.

The Pyre trailer was unveiled on October 12, offering a glimpse into director Vinod Kapri’s quiet, emotional story of love, loneliness and ageing in Uttarakhand’s Kumaon region. The film follows an elderly couple living in a remote mountain village that is gradually losing its residents, as they navigate everyday challenges and wait for their son, who has been away for 28 years.

The story centres on Padam Singh and Tulsi, affectionately known as Aama-Bubu. Their lives revolve around household chores, familiar arguments and the companionship they have developed over decades together. However, growing old in a village with limited access to basic facilities brings additional challenges.

Their son, Hariya, has been away for nearly three decades, and his absence becomes a central thread in the narrative. Through the couple’s wait, Pyre explores how migration in search of better opportunities affects families and elderly parents who remain in their hometowns.

Pyre Trailer Highlights Love, Ageing and Migration

The trailer moves between moments of humour and more difficult conversations about illness, ageing and uncertainty. Against the backdrop of the Himalayan landscape, the film focuses on the emotional bond between two people who have spent much of their lives together.

Rather than relying on dramatic twists, the story draws attention to the ordinary experiences of an ageing couple and the loneliness that can accompany an increasingly empty village.

The film’s setting also highlights the changing social realities of mountain communities, where migration can leave older residents managing daily life with fewer family members nearby.

Meet the Cast of Vinod Kapri’s Pyre

The film features Padam Singh Kapri, 80, and Heera Devi, 70, both residents of Uttarakhand who had never appeared in front of a camera before the project.

Kapri, a retired Army serviceman, plays a character who shares his name, while Heera Devi portrays Tulsi. Their performances form the centre of the film’s intimate portrayal of life in the hills.

Written and directed by Vinod Kapri, Pyre has travelled to international film festivals and received 18 awards, including 15 Best Film honours. The film has also earned recognition for its direction, music, cinematography and sound.

Pyre India Release Date and Special Screenings

Pyre is scheduled to release in Indian cinemas on October 30, 2026, in Hindi and Malayalam. Kapri has expressed his anticipation for audiences to experience the story and Himalayan landscape on the big screen.

Ahead of the theatrical release, special screenings are planned in Berinag, Bageshwar and Srinagar Garhwal from October 14 to 17 through Picture Time, a mobile theatre initiative that brings films to areas with limited access to permanent cinemas.

The film is produced by Vinod Kapri, Suresh Joshi and Arindra Rai Chaudhuri under Bhagirathi Films and Mashakbeen Studios.

With its focus on companionship, family separation and life in a changing mountain community, Pyre brings the experiences of elderly residents into the spotlight ahead of its nationwide release.
