Ranveer Singh Criticised for Mimicking Kantara’s Chaundi Scene at IFFI 2024

Actor Ranveer Singh has sparked controversy after a stage act at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2024 in Goa, where he mimicked a scene from Kantara Chapter 1 and referred to the revered Daiva figure Chaundi as a “female ghost.” The moment, which initially drew laughter from the audience—especially Kantara director-actor Rishab Shetty—has been widely criticised online for being “disrespectful” toward sacred Tulunad Daiva traditions.

During the segment, Ranveer praised the Kantara franchise before performing a comic imitation of Chaundi, complete with crossed eyes, his signature “primordial scream,” and an exaggerated expression. He joked with the audience, asking whether they would want to see him in Kantara 3, pointing teasingly at Shetty.

While the act was received warmly at the venue, clips of the moment went viral on social media, causing a wave of outrage. Users accused the actor of trivialising deeply spiritual practices associated with Daiva Aradhane, a ritual worship tradition held in high reverence in coastal Karnataka.

Several users on X (formerly Twitter) expressed anger, calling the mimicry “insensitive,” “unnecessary,” and “mocking sacred cultural beliefs.” Many questioned why Rishab Shetty—known for highlighting Tulunad traditions in Kantara—was seen laughing instead of calling out the portrayal.

Despite the online uproar, neither Ranveer Singh nor Rishab Shetty has issued a public statement on the incident so far.
