Shivaji Maharaj Image Outside Toilet Sparks Controversy in Haryana

A viral video allegedly showing portraits of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Maharani Padmini placed outside washrooms at a banquet hall in Haryana’s Faridabad has triggered widespread outrage and political controversy.

The clip, which surfaced on social media and spread rapidly, shows images being used as gender signboards outside restroom entrances. In the video, a man can be heard claiming the visuals were recorded at Milan Banquets in Sikri village.

The footage prompted strong reactions online, with many users demanding strict action against the establishment responsible. Critics described the act as disrespectful toward Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the 17th-century Maratha ruler revered across India as a symbol of courage, leadership, and national pride.

Social media backlash and political claims

Soon after the video went viral, several social media posts alleged that the banquet hall had links to a legislator from Haryana’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). These claims intensified the controversy and fueled political debate.

However, Tiparchand, identified as the owner of the banquet hall and brother of a BJP MLA, denied that the premises shown in the video belonged to him. He alleged that misleading claims were being circulated to defame him.

He stated that individuals angered by the demolition of illegal banquet halls in the area may be attempting to drag his name into the controversy. According to him, photographs of his property show clear differences in layout, paintwork, and interior décor compared to the visuals seen in the viral clip.

He further indicated that he is considering legal action against those responsible for spreading the video and linking his establishment to the incident.

Political reactions intensify the row

The controversy has also drawn political responses. Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad shared the video on social media and described the visuals as unacceptable. While she did not accuse any specific individual, she criticised what she termed repeated disrespect toward the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

She urged authorities to ensure immediate removal of the images and questioned why such incidents continue to surface.

Cultural sensitivity and public sentiment

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj holds deep cultural and historical significance in India and is widely honoured as a symbol of bravery and resistance. Any perceived disrespect toward his legacy often triggers strong public sentiment.

As the video continues to circulate online, authorities may face pressure to verify the authenticity of the footage and determine the exact location where it was recorded.

The incident highlights the powerful role of social media in amplifying controversies and the importance of verifying facts before assigning responsibility. It also underscores the sensitivity surrounding national icons and the need for cultural respect in public spaces.
