Congress Urges PM Modi to Visit Violence-Hit Manipur During Assam Tour

A fresh political exchange has brought Manipur’s ongoing unrest back into national focus after Congress leader Pawan Khera publicly urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the violence-affected state during his North-East tour. The appeal came while the Prime minister was in Assam to inaugurate and launch development projects worth over ₹5,450 crore.

In a post on social media platform X, Khera used a pointed tone to stress the urgency of the situation in Manipur. He remarked that while poll-bound states often receive priority attention, Manipur should not be overlooked. Referring to the prolonged unrest in the state, he stated that the region has been facing violence since 2023 and continues to experience periodic flare-ups.

Highlighting the geographical proximity between the two states, Khera noted that the Prime Minister was already in Assam and that Manipur is only a short flight away. He urged Modi to make the visit, arguing that the presence of the country’s top leadership could provide reassurance and confidence to residents affected by the ongoing tensions.

In a symbolic gesture meant to underline his appeal, Khera claimed that the Congress party had even arranged a flight from Guwahati to Imphal for the Prime Minister. He shared what he described as a flight ticket and wrote that the Prime Minister only needed to board the plane. He further stated that since he did not have direct contact details, he was sharing the ticket publicly and urged the Prime Minister to demonstrate concern for the people of Manipur.

The post quickly gained traction online, triggering strong reactions from both supporters and critics. Some users echoed the call for a prime ministerial visit, suggesting it could boost morale and signal national solidarity. Others questioned the tone and political messaging behind the appeal.

Manipur has remained a sensitive issue in national politics since ethnic violence erupted in 2023. Despite security deployments and administrative measures aimed at restoring stability, sporadic incidents have continued to fuel concern and political debate.

Opposition parties have repeatedly called for direct intervention and a visit by the Prime Minister, arguing that such a move would send a strong message of reassurance and national commitment. The central government has maintained that efforts are ongoing to restore peace and normalcy through coordinated administrative and security measures.

As of now, there has been no official response from the Prime Minister’s Office regarding the Congress leader’s remarks. The development has nonetheless reignited political discourse around Manipur and the broader question of leadership engagement in conflict-affected regions.
