Suspected Pakistani drones were sighted along the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday evening, triggering heightened security measures and renewed concerns over cross-border provocations. The latest incidents were reported from the Samba district and the Poonch sector, marking the third such drone sighting in the region within a week.
According to security sources, a drone-like object was detected near Keso Mahansan village in the Ramgarh sector of Samba district. Following the sighting, authorities immediately placed the area on high alert and activated standard counter-drone protocols. Surveillance teams and ground units were deployed to monitor the situation, while local residents were advised to remain cautious.
In a separate incident, another unidentified aerial object resembling a drone was spotted over Degwar village in the Poonch district at around 7:30 pm. The Indian Army responded swiftly, firing a few rounds in an attempt to neutralise the object. While no confirmation has yet been issued regarding whether the drone was successfully intercepted, security forces continue to maintain a strong presence in the area.
Officials said investigations are ongoing to determine the origin and purpose of the aerial objects. The repeated sightings have raised concerns about potential surveillance attempts, arms or narcotics drops, or reconnaissance activities along sensitive border areas.
The latest incidents come shortly after General Upendra Dwivedi issued a firm warning to Pakistan against ceasefire violations and cross-border provocations. During a recent visit to forward areas, the Army Chief had underlined that any attempt to destabilise peace along the Line of Control or the International Border would be met with a strong and proportionate response.
Security analysts note that the timing of the drone sightings, following the Army Chief’s remarks, is significant and suggests a possible attempt to test India’s border surveillance and response mechanisms. Over the past few years, the use of drones for cross-border infiltration has emerged as a major security challenge, particularly in Jammu, Samba, Kathua and Poonch sectors.
The Indian security establishment has ramped up counter-drone capabilities, deploying advanced detection systems, electronic jammers and aerial surveillance assets. Despite these measures, sporadic drone sightings continue to be reported, underscoring the evolving nature of cross-border threats.
Officials said coordination between the Indian Army, Border Security Force (BSF) and local police has been intensified following the latest incidents. Night patrols have been reinforced, and additional checkpoints have been established in vulnerable areas to prevent any potential infiltration or smuggling attempts.
While no casualties or material losses have been reported so far, authorities remain cautious. Security agencies have urged residents living near border villages to immediately report any suspicious activity or aerial movement.
The situation remains fluid, and further details are expected as security forces continue to scan the affected areas. Officials reiterated that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of civilians and maintain the integrity of the country’s borders.
