Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Announces Rs 20,000 Crore Energy Plan, 1,200 MW Thoothukudi Power Plant

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has announced a Rs 20,000-crore energy and infrastructure package, with a major focus on strengthening the state's electricity network and meeting rising power demand.

The plan includes a new 1,200 MW supercritical thermal power plant in Thoothukudi. The project will be developed through a public-private partnership and will have two units with a combined capacity of 1,200 MW.

The government will also roll out the Tamil Nadu Transmission Improvement Scheme covering 15,000 km to strengthen the state's power transmission network. Battery storage systems are also being developed to store surplus electricity and make it available during periods of high demand.

In Chennai, 36 new 33/11 kV power substations will be established to improve electricity supply and reduce disruptions, particularly during floods. The government has also allocated Rs 1,200 crore for upgrading power infrastructure and equipment.

Vijay said additional investment in the power sector was necessary as Tamil Nadu's electricity requirements continue to grow. The state has remained dependent on thermal power during periods of peak demand.

Alongside the energy projects, the government announced a semiconductor and electronics manufacturing park in Kancheepuram district. The Rs 175-crore project is expected to attract around Rs 2,000 crore in investments and generate approximately 5,000 jobs.

A fintech hub will also be established in Coimbatore at a cost of Rs 400 crore through a public-private partnership, according to the Chief Minister.

Vijay also announced an increase in the milk procurement price from Rs 41 to Rs 44 per litre. The decision was attributed to rising cattle-feed costs and demands from milk producers and is expected to add around Rs 770 crore to the government's annual expenditure.

The announcements combine power generation, transmission upgrades, industrial infrastructure and employment initiatives, with the state government seeking to support Tamil Nadu's growing energy requirements while attracting investment in emerging sectors.
