83,000+ WhatsApp Accounts Blocked in India Cybercrime Crackdown by Centre

In a significant move to combat rising cyber fraud and digital scams, the central government has blocked over 83,000 WhatsApp accounts linked to fraudulent activities. The action is part of a large-scale crackdown led by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) through its cyber wing.

The initiative aims to dismantle organised networks involved in online scams, including investment frauds and digital arrest schemes that have been affecting citizens across the country.

Thousands of Accounts and IDs Blocked

According to official sources, authorities have blocked a total of 83,867 WhatsApp accounts that were actively being used to carry out cyber fraud operations. In addition to this, 3,962 Skype IDs have also been disabled as part of the operation.

These accounts were identified as key tools used by cybercriminals to communicate with victims and execute scams.

Action Extends to SIM Cards and Devices

The crackdown has gone beyond messaging platforms and targeted mobile infrastructure as well. Authorities have blocked approximately 8.45 lakh SIM cards and 2.39 lakh mobile IMEI numbers.

These numbers were flagged through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), which played a crucial role in identifying suspicious and fraudulent activities.

Role of I4C in Cyber Security Efforts

The operation was carried out by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The agency has been actively working to strengthen India’s cyber security framework and respond to emerging digital threats.

Through coordinated efforts, I4C has been tracking cybercriminal networks and taking swift action to disrupt their operations.

Rising Threat of Digital Fraud

The crackdown comes at a time when cyber fraud cases have been increasing rapidly across the country. Scammers are using advanced methods, including fake investment schemes and impersonation tactics, to target individuals.

Authorities believe that such strong measures are necessary to protect citizens and reduce the scale of financial losses caused by cybercrime.

Use of Technology and Public Reporting

The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal has played a key role in enabling citizens to report suspicious activities. This data has helped authorities identify patterns and take targeted action against offenders.

Officials have also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious calls, messages, or online activities.
