Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Kolkata on Monday and was questioned for more than 11 hours in connection with the alleged West Bengal primary school recruitment scam.
The lengthy interrogation is part of an ongoing money laundering investigation related to alleged irregularities in the recruitment process for primary school teachers in the state. The case has remained one of the most closely watched political and legal developments in West Bengal, drawing significant attention from both political observers and the public.
According to officials familiar with the investigation, Abhishek Banerjee arrived at the ED office located at Kolkata's CGO Complex shortly before 11 am in response to a summons issued by the agency.
Investigators reportedly prepared a detailed questionnaire as part of the inquiry and sought clarifications on multiple aspects linked to the alleged recruitment irregularities. The questioning session continued for more than 11 hours, making it one of the longest rounds of interrogation involving the senior TMC leader in the case.
The Enforcement Directorate is investigating possible financial transactions and alleged money laundering links connected to the recruitment process. The agency has been examining various documents, statements and financial records as part of its broader probe.
After the questioning session concluded late in the evening, Abhishek Banerjee stated that he had fully cooperated with the investigating agency throughout the process.
The TMC leader maintained that he answered all questions put forward by the investigators and expressed confidence in his position regarding the matter. He reiterated that he was willing to cooperate whenever required by authorities.
Banerjee also alleged that investigative agencies were being used to put pressure on opposition leaders, a charge that has been repeatedly raised by several opposition parties across the country. He claimed that such actions were politically motivated and aimed at targeting political opponents.
The alleged school recruitment scam has emerged as one of the biggest controversies in West Bengal in recent years. The investigation revolves around claims of irregularities in appointments made during the recruitment of teachers and non-teaching staff in educational institutions.
Multiple agencies have been examining different aspects of the case, including allegations of financial misconduct, manipulation in recruitment procedures and suspected illegal transactions linked to appointments.
The issue has triggered intense political debates in the state, with opposition parties demanding accountability while the ruling Trinamool Congress has continued to reject allegations of institutional wrongdoing.
Abhishek Banerjee's appearance before the Enforcement Directorate is expected to fuel fresh political discussions ahead of upcoming electoral battles in West Bengal. Political analysts believe the development could become a key talking point for both the ruling party and the opposition.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to examine additional evidence and statements to determine the next course of action. The case remains under active scrutiny, and further developments are likely in the coming weeks.
The Enforcement Directorate is expected to review the information gathered during the questioning session and compare it with existing evidence collected during the investigation. Depending on the findings, the agency may issue further notices or summon additional individuals linked to the case.
For now, the focus remains on the ongoing probe into the alleged recruitment scam and its wider political and legal implications in West Bengal.
