In a significant development, industrialist Pawan Ruia has been arrested by the Cyber Crime Wing of the West Bengal Police in connection with an alleged Rs 315 crore cyber fraud case. The arrest took place near a hotel in New Town, on the outskirts of Kolkata, following an ongoing investigation into large-scale financial irregularities.

Authorities have linked the case to a complex network involving shell companies and cryptocurrency-based money laundering operations.

Fraud Linked to Shell Companies and Cryptocurrency Transactions

According to investigators, the fraud involves routing large sums of money through multiple shell companies and digital assets. Preliminary findings suggest that proceeds of crime amounting to approximately Rs 315 crore were transferred into various bank accounts connected to entities and individuals associated with the Ruia family.

The use of cryptocurrency is believed to have played a crucial role in obscuring financial trails, making the investigation more challenging for authorities.

Over 1,300 Cyber Fraud Complaints Connected to Case

Data accessed from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal has revealed that the accused may be linked to at least 1,379 cyber fraud complaints reported across India. This indicates the wide scale and reach of the alleged fraud operation.

The complaints span multiple states, highlighting how cybercrime networks can operate across regions using digital platforms.

Earlier Arrest in the Case at Delhi Airport

In a related development, another accused, Rahul Verma, was arrested in November 2025 at Delhi airport while allegedly attempting to flee the country. He is currently in judicial custody.

Investigators believe that multiple individuals may be involved in the case, and further arrests cannot be ruled out as the probe progresses.

Police Register Suo Motu Case, Investigation Intensifies

The West Bengal Police registered a suo motu case based on findings from their ongoing cybercrime investigations. The case was lodged at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station, which has been actively tracking financial fraud cases involving digital platforms.

Officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts focused on tracing the money trail, identifying additional suspects, and recovering defrauded funds.
