Security forces in Washington, DC arrested an 18-year-old man after he ran toward the US Capitol building carrying a loaded shotgun while wearing tactical gear. The alarming incident prompted an immediate response from Capitol Police and triggered a security investigation into the suspect’s motive.
Authorities identified the suspect as Carter Camacho of Smyrna, Georgia. According to officials, he parked a Mercedes SUV near the Capitol complex before exiting the vehicle and running several hundred yards toward the west side of the building while holding a shotgun.
Officers stationed in the area quickly intercepted the suspect and ordered him to drop the weapon and lie on the ground. He complied and was taken into custody without any injuries or shots being fired.
Police stated that the shotgun was loaded and the suspect was carrying additional ammunition. He was wearing a tactical vest and gloves at the time of the incident. A search of his vehicle uncovered a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask, raising further concerns about preparedness and intent.
Officials confirmed that investigators are working to determine the motive behind the incident, including whether any public officials or government institutions were potential targets. Congress was not in session at the time.
Authorities noted that the suspect was not known to local law enforcement and was not from the Washington area. The vehicle used in the incident was not registered in his name, and officials said he has multiple listed addresses.
He is currently being held on charges including unlawful activities, carrying a rifle without a licence, possession of an unregistered firearm and possession of unregistered ammunition.
Law enforcement officials also requested that members of the public share any video footage that may help reconstruct the incident timeline.
Security preparedness remains a top priority at the Capitol complex, especially with President Donald Trump’s upcoming State of the Union address scheduled for next week. Officials stated that the arrest does not alter security planning for the event.
In recent years, the Capitol area has seen several security incidents, prompting enhanced surveillance and regular active-shooter preparedness drills. Authorities noted that officers had conducted training exercises in the same area where the arrest took place.
Washington has seen a decline in crime rates in early 2026 compared to previous years, following enhanced security measures and increased deployment of federal law enforcement personnel.
The swift response by Capitol Police prevented any potential threat, underscoring the importance of vigilant security measures at high-profile government sites.
