Atal Awasiya Vidyalaya Scheme Explained: Free Residential CBSE Education for UP Workers’ Children

Uttar Pradesh's Atal Awasiya Vidyalaya scheme is aimed at providing free and uninterrupted residential education to eligible children from economically and socially vulnerable families, particularly those whose parents work in the construction sector.

The residential school programme offers education from Class 6 to Class 12 along with free boarding and other essential facilities. One of its key objectives is to prevent disruptions in children's education when their parents migrate from one place to another in search of work.

The scheme is implemented by the Uttar Pradesh Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board under the state's Labour Department.

There are currently 18 Atal Awasiya Vidyalayas across Uttar Pradesh, with one residential school established in each of the state's 18 divisions. The schools follow a CBSE-affiliated curriculum and provide students with an opportunity to continue their education at the same institution until Class 12.

Sixteen of the schools were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2023. The network of 18 schools was reportedly developed at a cost of around Rs 1,115 crore, with every campus designed to accommodate approximately 1,000 students.

Admissions are primarily offered in Class 6 and Class 9. Students admitted to the schools can continue their education there until completing Class 12.

The scheme mainly covers children of construction workers registered with the Uttar Pradesh Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board. Certain other categories of children, including some children orphaned during the Covid-19 pandemic and other groups identified by the state government, may also be eligible.

Applicants must meet the eligibility conditions prescribed for the relevant admission session. Generally, the child must belong to a registered construction worker's family, and a maximum of two children from one family can apply.

The scheme also provides significant representation for girls, with 50% of seats reserved for female students.

Admissions to Class 6 and Class 9 are generally conducted through entrance examinations. Eligibility conditions, including age limits and requirements related to a parent's construction-worker registration, may vary depending on the admission notification issued for a particular academic year.

Apart from free education, Atal Awasiya Vidyalayas provide students with residential accommodation, meals, uniforms and textbooks. The schools also offer facilities for sports and extracurricular activities.

The campuses include separate hostels for boys and girls, classrooms, laboratories, playgrounds, dining areas, medical facilities and accommodation for staff.

The residential model is particularly important for children whose parents frequently move for employment, as it allows students to continue their education without repeatedly changing schools.

Admissions are conducted according to notifications issued for each academic session. Application procedures and admission details are generally made available through the Uttar Pradesh Labour Department, district-level authorities and the Atal Awasiya Vidyalaya system.
