Bengaluru Airport Staff Arrested for Molesting Korean Tourist During Fake Baggage Check

A disturbing incident at Kempegowda International Airport has raised serious concerns over passenger safety after a South Korean tourist accused an airport staff member of sexually molesting her under the pretext of a baggage inspection. The incident reportedly occurred on January 19, shortly after the woman completed immigration formalities.

According to the complaint, the accused, identified as Afan Ahmed, approached the tourist and claimed that her check-in baggage had triggered a beeping alert. He allegedly told her that conducting a detailed inspection at the counter would delay her flight and instead suggested a “personal check” as a quicker alternative.

The FIR states that Ahmed then took the woman to an isolated area near a washroom inside the airport premises. There, he allegedly touched her chest and private parts multiple times, pressed her chest, and hugged her from behind without her consent. When the woman resisted and objected to his actions, the accused reportedly disengaged, said “OK, thank you,” and walked away.

Shaken by the incident, the tourist immediately approached airport security officials and lodged a formal complaint. Security personnel promptly detained the accused and handed him over to the police for further action. Based on the victim’s statement, a case has been registered, and a detailed investigation has been initiated to establish the sequence of events and any possible security lapses.

The victim, Kim Sung Kyung, later spoke publicly about the incident after consenting to reveal her identity. She stated that while the experience was traumatic, it did not alter her overall perception of India as a country. She also expressed hope that airport authorities would strengthen security protocols to prevent such incidents in the future, especially for international travellers unfamiliar with local procedures.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that CCTV footage from the airport is being examined and statements from witnesses are being recorded as part of the investigation. Authorities are also reviewing whether the accused had the authority to conduct any form of baggage or personal checks.

The incident has once again brought attention to passenger safety, staff accountability, and monitoring mechanisms at major international airports. Civil aviation experts have stressed the need for clearer identification of authorised personnel, stricter access controls, and increased surveillance in restricted areas to ensure the safety and dignity of travellers.

Airport authorities have not yet issued a detailed statement but indicated that they are cooperating fully with the investigation. Further action will depend on the findings of the probe.
