Paddy Upton Reveals India's Hockey World Cup Preparation: 'Champions Arrive as Champions'

India's men's hockey team is entering the 2026 Hockey World Cup with renewed confidence after an unconventional preparation programme designed to strengthen both physical endurance and mental resilience.

Mental conditioning expert Paddy Upton, who has been working closely with the national team under head coach Craig Fulton, revealed that India's preparation extended far beyond the hockey field. From high-altitude training in the Swiss Alps to a cutting-edge AI-powered coaching assistant, the focus has been on ensuring the players arrive at the tournament with the mindset of champions.

Swiss Alps Camp Built Mental Toughness

Ahead of the World Cup, Hockey India sent the squad to Upton's high-altitude training facility in the Swiss Alps, where players underwent a three-day programme aimed at pushing them beyond their physical and psychological comfort zones.

According to Upton, the objective was never to fix weaknesses but to help players confront fear, fatigue and uncertainty in challenging environments.

He explained that the demanding conditions at high altitude forced players to continue performing despite exhaustion, helping them build resilience that could prove invaluable during pressure situations on the field.

Lessons Reflected in India's Recent Success

Upton believes the team's mental preparation has already delivered results.

He pointed to India's memorable quarter-final victory over Great Britain at the Paris Olympics, where the team defended with 10 players for more than 40 minutes before winning in a shootout.

According to him, experiences during the Swiss training camp helped players remain composed and confident under extraordinary pressure.

India has also enjoyed recent success by winning the 2025 Asia Cup and securing the Paris Olympics bronze medal, performances that showcased the team's growing mental strength alongside its technical ability.

'Champions Arrive as Champions'

One of Upton's strongest messages to the Indian squad is that championship-winning teams should not wait until the final to believe they belong among the world's best.

Instead, he wants players to prepare and behave like champions from the very beginning.

"Champions arrive at a tournament as champions. They don't wait to win the final to confirm that they are champions," Upton said.

He stressed that world-class standards extend beyond match day, including fitness, recovery, sleep, nutrition and attention to detail throughout the tournament.

Rather than focusing solely on lifting the trophy, Upton said the team's objective is to prepare for every obstacle that could stand in the way of reaching the final.

AI 'Digital Twin' Offers Players 24/7 Mental Coaching

In a first for elite sport, Upton has introduced a digital version of himself that allows players to access mental coaching at any time.

The AI-powered "digital twin" has been trained using Upton's own coaching philosophy and communication style, enabling players to receive guidance whenever required.

The platform supports conversations in both English and Hindi and provides direct, personalised feedback, even when Upton is not physically with the team.

He described the initiative as an experimental but promising step in sports psychology, with players already actively engaging with the technology.

Luck Still Matters in Knockout Tournaments

Despite extensive preparation, Upton cautioned against believing that success can be entirely controlled.

He acknowledged that luck often influences the outcome of high-pressure knockout matches, citing moments such as late penalty corners or unpredictable in-game incidents.

According to Upton, preparation maximises a team's chances of success, but fortune remains an unavoidable factor in championship campaigns.

India Begin Hockey World Cup Campaign Against Wales

India will open their 2026 Hockey World Cup campaign against Wales on August 15.

The opening match will offer the first opportunity to see whether Upton's mental conditioning methods and the team's unconventional preparation translate into success on the biggest stage.

Why This Matters

Modern international sport increasingly recognises mental resilience as a competitive advantage. India's approach—combining high-performance psychology, immersive team-building and AI-assisted mental coaching—reflects a broader shift towards holistic athlete development as teams search for every possible edge in major tournaments.
