Bihar government has proposed a significant increase in monthly scholarships for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) students living in welfare hostels. As per the proposal, the current scholarship amount of ₹1,000 may be doubled to ₹2,000 per month.
This move is aimed at providing financial relief and improving access to education for students from economically weaker backgrounds.
The plan has been prepared by the Department of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Welfare Bihar and is expected to be presented before the state cabinet soon.
Once approved, the revised scholarship will be implemented across all eligible hostels in the state, benefiting thousands of students.
The proposed increase is designed to help students manage their day-to-day expenses more effectively. Many hostel residents come from underprivileged backgrounds and rely heavily on government support to continue their education.
The additional financial aid is expected to reduce economic stress and allow students to focus better on their studies.
The proposal is expected to benefit nearly 10,000 students residing in 139 Dr Ambedkar Welfare Hostels across Bihar. These hostels are designed to support students academically and financially.
Apart from accommodation, they provide access to digital classrooms, libraries, and other essential educational resources.
Students living in these hostels also receive 15 kilograms of food grains every month, including 9 kg of rice and 6 kg of wheat. Combined with the scholarship, this support system plays a crucial role in sustaining their education.
The increased scholarship amount is expected to further strengthen this support framework.
The initiative reflects the government’s broader focus on promoting inclusive education and supporting marginalized communities. By improving financial assistance, the state aims to ensure that more students can continue their academic journey without disruption.
Such measures are crucial in bridging educational gaps and creating equal opportunities.
The proposal is currently awaiting cabinet approval. Once cleared, it will be officially implemented, bringing immediate benefits to eligible students.
If approved, the move could significantly improve the financial stability and academic continuity of thousands of students across Bihar.
