BSNL Director’s Prayagraj Visit Cancelled After VIP Protocol Leak Sparks Row

BSNL Director’s Prayagraj Visit Cancelled After VIP Protocol Leak Sparks Row

A planned visit by a senior Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) official to Prayagraj has been cancelled after an internal document detailing elaborate hospitality arrangements went viral, sparking criticism over VIP culture and the use of public resources.

The February 25 visit of BSNL Director Vivek Banzal was called off shortly after the protocol document began circulating online. The document outlined extensive logistical and hospitality arrangements, prompting sharp reactions from the public and social media users.

Detailed visit protocol draws scrutiny

The communication, issued at the divisional level, provided a minute-to-minute schedule covering the director’s entire visit. It included reception arrangements, transportation planning, religious visits, meal coordination, and personal comfort provisions.

The protocol also contained detailed instructions for a proposed visit to the Triveni Sangam, including arrangements for a ritual bath and post-bath personal care logistics. Officials were instructed to manage items such as towels and personal belongings after bathing.

Over 50 staff assigned duties

Reports indicate that more than 50 BSNL officers and staff members were assigned specific responsibilities for the visit. Teams were designated to coordinate movement, hospitality, bathing arrangements, and post-visit logistics.

Instructions included arranging bath kits, refreshments, escort services, and coordination support throughout the itinerary, including visits to the Sangam and nearby temples.

Social media backlash over VIP culture

After the document surfaced online, it triggered widespread criticism. Many users questioned the scale of arrangements and the deployment of public sector resources for the visit, with some describing the protocol as excessive.

The controversy reignited broader debate around VIP culture and administrative priorities within government-owned organisations.

Visit withdrawn after escalation

Following the backlash and escalation of the matter to senior authorities, the visit was cancelled within a day. BSNL’s public relations office confirmed that the Prayagraj programme had been withdrawn and stated that the previously issued protocol should be treated as invalid.

No further official comment was provided regarding the controversy.

Debate over administrative practices

The incident has intensified discussions around transparency, resource utilisation, and official travel protocols in public sector undertakings. Critics argue that government-linked organisations must ensure accountability and avoid perceptions of preferential treatment.

The swift cancellation reflects the growing influence of public scrutiny and social media in shaping administrative responses.
