Cristiano Ronaldo’s competitive fire once again took centre stage, as the Al-Nassr captain was caught on camera sarcastically mocking the referee during his side’s 3–1 victory over Neom in the Saudi Pro League on Saturday. Despite a strong result for Al-Nassr, Ronaldo’s pointed exchange with the match official sparked conversations across global football circles.
The incident unfolded just before half-time with the score still 0–0. Al-Nassr had launched a promising counterattack when the referee’s whistle abruptly halted play, much to Ronaldo’s frustration. As the players walked off for the interval, cameras caught the 40-year-old star confronting the referee and unleashing a sarcastic outburst.
“Well done, well done. Keep going like that, you’re doing a good game — very good game you do,” Ronaldo was heard saying in an unmistakably mocking tone. His exaggerated applause and visible irritation left little doubt about his disapproval. Teammates stepped in to calm him as the officials and players entered the tunnel.
This isn’t the first time Ronaldo’s emotions have flared in Saudi football, but it once again showcased his unrelenting demand for fairness and his passion for perfection — even in matches Al-Nassr ultimately win comfortably.
The frustration of the first half soon turned into focus. Just minutes after the break, Al-Nassr opened the scoring when Angelo Gabriel, formerly of Chelsea, fired home a rebound after Ronaldo’s free-kick was blocked by Neom’s defence.
Neom’s troubles mounted when striker Luciano Rodríguez was sent off following a VAR check for elbowing an opponent — leaving them a man short. The setback came shortly after the side had already lost former Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette to injury.
Ronaldo, who had missed a header earlier, found redemption midway through the second half. After teammate Joao Felix was shoved in the penalty area, the Portuguese star stepped up and calmly slotted the spot-kick into the bottom corner. The goal marked his 953rd career strike and 83rd in the Saudi Pro League since joining Al-Nassr in early 2023.
Neom managed a brief response through Ahmed Abdo in the 84th minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse from Mohamed Simakan. But Felix restored Al-Nassr’s two-goal cushion shortly after, sealing a 3–1 victory and keeping the Riyadh-based club three points clear at the top of the league table.
The Portuguese legend’s sarcastic comments mirror growing concerns about the standard of officiating in the Saudi Pro League. Several players have voiced frustration in recent weeks, calling for more consistency and clarity in VAR interventions.
Yet, as always, Ronaldo’s reaction was the night’s talking point — fiery, emotional, and driven by the same hunger that has defined his career for two decades.
Even at 40, Cristiano Ronaldo remains football’s ultimate perfectionist — one who demands excellence not just from himself, but from everyone sharing the pitch.
