Davinder Gill on Kohrra 2: Breaking Punjabi Stereotypes and Portraying Bonded Labour Reality

Actor Davinder Gill made a strong impression as Constable Aujla in Kohrra Season 2. Though not the central character, his performance added a distinct charm and authenticity to the intense crime drama. In a recent interaction, Gill spoke about preparing for the role, working with co-star Barun Sobti, and how the series challenges stereotypes around Punjabi representation.

Landing Aujla in Kohrra Season 2

Gill revealed that he had previously auditioned for a minor role in Season 1 but did not get selected. Looking back, he believes that rejection paved the way for something better. When Kohrra Season 2 expanded its narrative, he was cast as Constable Aujla — a character that blends confidence, curiosity, and subtle humour.

Director Sudip Sharma reportedly shaped Aujla around Gill’s natural personality. Instead of intense rehearsals, Sharma engaged him in informal conversations about his college days and personal experiences. That comfort helped develop Aujla’s layered character.

Interestingly, Gill improvised English phrases during an early shoot. The team embraced the idea, adding a backstory that Aujla was preparing for civil services exams. This detail enhanced the character’s aspirational tone and added depth to his personality.

Preparing for a Punjab Police Role

To portray a realistic Punjab Police constable, Gill observed real-life officers, including friends within the force. He studied their body language, conversational style, and daily routine. He emphasised that police personnel in rural areas often react calmly to crime scenes due to constant exposure.

Gill admitted that during auditions, he initially reacted strongly to crime scenes. However, after interacting with actual officers, he realised professionalism replaces shock in such environments. This understanding helped him deliver a more grounded performance.

On Working with Barun Sobti

Most of Gill’s scenes are alongside Barun Sobti, who plays ASI Garundi. Gill described Sobti as warm and supportive from day one. Their off-screen rapport, he said, translated naturally into their on-screen dynamic, enhancing the authenticity of their interactions.

Breaking Punjabi Stereotypes

One of Kohrra’s strengths lies in its nuanced portrayal of Sikh and Punjabi characters. Gill credited writer Gunjit Chopra for presenting layered individuals rather than caricatures. He noted that mainstream cinema often reduced Punjabi characters to comic stereotypes, but audiences now seek authenticity and depth.

Addressing Bonded Labour in Punjab

Kohrra Season 2 also touches on bonded labour — a theme rooted in real incidents. Gill explained that such exploitation was more common between 2005 and 2012, especially involving migrant labourers. However, improved technology, social awareness, and NGO intervention have reduced such practices today.

What’s Next for Aujla?

When asked about a possible third season, Gill hinted at exploring a darker side of Aujla if the story continues. For now, his portrayal stands as a reminder that even supporting characters can leave a lasting impact when written and performed with sincerity.
