Europe Opposes US Move to Lift Russian Oil Sanctions: German Envoy

European diplomats have raised concerns over the United States decision to ease restrictions on Russia’s oil exports, warning that the move could strengthen Moscow’s ability to sustain its war in Ukraine.

Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2026, Philipp Ackermann, Germany’s Ambassador to India, said European governments are not supportive of lifting the price cap on Russian crude.

According to him, easing sanctions risks undermining efforts to pressure Russia over the Ukraine conflict.

Europe Concerned About Russia–Ukraine War

Ackermann noted that Western countries and the European Union imposed sanctions on Russian oil in 2022 after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

These measures were designed to reduce Russia’s energy revenues and limit its ability to fund the war.

Allowing more Russian oil into global markets, he argued, could weaken that strategy.

Middle East Conflict Adding to Energy Uncertainty

European diplomats also warned that the escalating conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States could further destabilise global energy markets.

The crisis in the Middle East has already disrupted shipping routes and increased volatility in oil prices.

Diplomats said the situation risks diverting international attention from the Russia–Ukraine war, which has now entered its fifth year.

Europe Feels Impact Despite Not Being Involved

During the discussion, Ackermann emphasised that Europe has been significantly affected by the energy and economic consequences of the conflict even though it is not directly involved in the fighting.

Energy price fluctuations, supply chain disruptions and geopolitical uncertainty have placed pressure on European economies.

Call for Diplomacy and Peace

Other European diplomats at the event echoed similar concerns.

Antonio Bartoli, Italy’s ambassador to India, and Juan Antonio March Pujol, Spain’s ambassador to India, stressed the importance of diplomatic engagement rather than military escalation.

They argued that negotiations remain the most effective path to stabilising global markets and preventing further conflict.

Energy Security and Global Stability

The discussion highlighted how geopolitical tensions across multiple regions are now interconnected.

Developments in the Middle East, Europe and global energy markets are influencing each other, making diplomatic coordination increasingly important.

European diplomats said maintaining pressure on Russia while working toward peace remains a key priority for the region.
