The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to revoke the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, months after he was held under the National Security Act following unrest in Leh in Ladakh.
Officials said the decision was taken to help restore peace in the region and create space for constructive dialogue with local stakeholders.
Sonam Wangchuk was detained on September 26, 2025, under provisions of the National Security Act after authorities cited concerns over maintaining public order.
The detention order had been issued by the District Magistrate of Leh in response to a law and order situation that developed in the town two days earlier.
According to government officials, the move was considered necessary at the time to prevent escalation of tensions.
The detention followed disturbances reported in Leh on September 24, 2025.
Authorities described the situation as a serious law and order issue in the otherwise peaceful Himalayan town.
The developments led to administrative action, including preventive detention under the NSA.
In its statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs said Wangchuk has already spent nearly half of the detention period under the law.
The government added that revoking the detention now is part of efforts to promote stability and encourage dialogue in Ladakh.
Officials indicated that engagement with community leaders and stakeholders will be important for maintaining long-term peace in the region.
Sonam Wangchuk is widely known for his work on environmental issues, sustainable development and education in the Himalayan region.
His initiatives have focused on climate resilience and innovative solutions for mountain communities.
The decision to release him is expected to attract attention given his influence in Ladakh and across India.
Authorities are expected to complete the formalities for revoking the detention order soon.
Officials say the broader goal is to ensure stability in Ladakh while also maintaining open communication channels with civil society and local groups.
The development marks a significant step in resolving tensions that emerged in Leh last year.
