Anwar Ibrahim’s Modi Popularity Quip Leaves PM Modi Laughing at BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a light-hearted moment with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in New Delhi on Saturday when a comment about Modi's popularity left the Indian leader laughing.

Ibrahim, who is in the capital for the 18th BRICS Summit, told Modi that he had received numerous messages asking him to convey greetings to the Indian Prime Minister. The remark prompted a hearty laugh from Modi as the two leaders prepared for their meeting.

Their discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between India and Malaysia across several areas, including trade, investment, defence, security, energy, semiconductors, infrastructure, digital economy, fintech, education, tourism and people-to-people ties.

The meeting followed Modi's visit to Malaysia in February 2026. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual interest.

The BRICS Summit in New Delhi has brought together several prominent global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

The summit is being held at Bharat Mandapam and is also drawing senior representatives from international institutions. BRICS has expanded significantly in recent years, with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and Saudi Arabia joining in 2024, followed by Indonesia in 2025. Several countries, including Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand, are now partner countries of the grouping.
