Ben Shelton Dedicates US Open 2026 Final Run to Late Grandmother, Honours 9/11 Victims

Ben Shelton’s breakthrough run at the US Open 2026 has taken on a deeply personal significance after the American dedicated his first Grand Slam final appearance to his late grandmother. Shelton reached the title clash by defeating fellow American Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 in the semi-final at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Speaking after the victory, Shelton reflected on the sacrifices made by his parents and revealed that his grandmother, who died earlier this year, played an important role in his family’s tennis journey. He dedicated his achievement to her, saying her support was a key reason he was able to pursue the sport.

The 23-year-old’s achievement also carries historic significance. Shelton became the first Black American man to reach the US Open men’s singles final since Arthur Ashe did so in 1972. He now has an opportunity to become the first American man since Andy Roddick in 2003 to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Shelton also acknowledged the significance of September 11 while speaking to the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd. He paid tribute to the families affected by the 9/11 attacks and described New York as one of the world’s greatest cities.

Before Sunday’s final, Shelton called on the home crowd to bring their energy and support as he prepares for the biggest match of his career. His opponent will be world No. 1 Alexander Zverev, who defeated Karen Khachanov in the other semi-final.

Zverev has dominated his previous encounters with Shelton, winning all five meetings, including their latest clash at the 2025 Nitto ATP Finals. However, the pair have never met at a Grand Slam.

A victory over Zverev would give Shelton his maiden major title while ending a 23-year wait for an American man to win a Grand Slam. It would also add another historic chapter to his remarkable US Open campaign.
