Supreme Court May Inspect NTA Office, Seeks Update on NEET Reforms

The Supreme Court has indicated that its judges may visit the National Testing Agency’s upgraded permanent office in New Delhi to assess whether reforms introduced after concerns over the NEET-UG examination are functioning effectively. The court is hearing petitions linked to the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and has sought updated information on the implementation of examination reforms.

Justice P S Narasimha said the court could inspect the NTA’s systems, infrastructure and manpower. The bench stressed that recommendations made by expert committees should not remain confined to reports but must result in practical and lasting changes to the examination process.

The court directed the Joint Secretary assisting the high-powered reforms committee to file an affidavit detailing the progress made so far. NTA has also been asked to submit an updated affidavit on reforms implemented and upload the information on its website.

The Centre told the court that the high-powered committee headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani has completed extensive consultations and is likely to submit its first interim report by the end of September. The panel has also consulted members of an earlier committee headed by former ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan.

The bench also discussed the need for a more permanent institutional structure for NTA, including stable staffing and dedicated divisions, with limited reliance on deputed personnel. The court is examining whether reforms are being institutionalised rather than implemented only as short-term measures.

The developments come as authorities review examination security and administrative systems following allegations surrounding NEET-UG 2026.
